An Amazing Teacher

8/1/2014

If you do any amount of online banking or purchasing, you have likely found yourself answering security questions while setting up your online accounts.  One question almost always available to pick from is, “Who was your favorite teacher in school?”  For some, this may be a hard question to think of an answer, but I have a hands-down favorite.  I had Mrs. Mullens (never knew her first name) for different science classes two years in Junior HS.  (Just so you don’t worry, I never use this particular security question, so no top secret info being divulged here).

Mrs. Mullens was able to relate even the most technical aspect of Physics to everyday life.  Lab time always revealed unexpected discoveries that I still remember—and use—even to this day.  Her lectures were never boring, never seemed trivial, and engaged her students real-time in the discussion.  Perhaps most of all, there was no doubt in my mind that Mrs. Mullens cared deeply about me and my classmates, and that she wanted to share her love for science with us in such a way that we genuinely loved science too.  Mrs. Mullens was great and amazing.
I suspect your favorite teacher(s) might have demonstrated the same or similar attributes in their classes, regardless of the particular subject they taught.  Here I am talking about applicability to real life, memorable lessons, personal engagement, and a deep rooted caring.  This month (August), we will be exploring the teachings of another great and amazing teacher—a teacher that is dedicated to teaching all of us, from generation to generation, and with a love that exceeds all human understanding.  This month, we will dive into some of Jesus’ best known teachings; teachings he passed on to us through his example, his stories, and his direct guidance.  We will be taking a fresh look at five passages within the Gospel of Matthew (see the listing of suggested passages later in this newsletter) for how we may learn and apply these teachings of Jesus’ in our lives, in this time and place.

I encourage you to invite a friend, a neighbor, a family member, to join you for Sunday morning worship as we explore together the teachings of the One who IS our favorite teacher—the teacher who is interested in real life, the instructor who is the personification of profound revelation, the guide who desires us to be fully engaged in what he has to offer, and the One whose love for each one of us is without equal.  I look forward studying, and learning, and living together in the coming weeks.

May your everyday be a day of revelation and transformation through God’s abiding grace.
Blessings … Pastor Bob
